When looking to rev up their biking experience, serious riders know that mountain biking offers new challenges and speaks to that sense of adventure so many of us have. But what should a biker do when there are no mountains to be had? Does that mean you’ll miss out on this experience that combines an adrenaline-pumping ride with the beauty of nature?

Not at all, according to Jim.

Despite its lack of mountains or even hills, Hilton Head Island offers bikers plenty of excellent options for taking a ride off-road and enjoying the thrill of nature rushing by. To make it possible, we carry hybrid bikes and gravel bikes – both perfect for tackling multiple types of surfaces. These bikes can take you from the street to the dirt and most places in between.

To get your heart racing, here are four local trails where a mountain bike-style adventure is still possible for anyone who dares.

Bristol Park

Scenic, rustic trails here offer a seriously nature-inspired ride. Although Bristol Park wouldn’t be considered difficult terrain, you’ll love the hard-packed gravel trail with minor elevation changes. You’ll spot the trailhead just behind the skate park.

Sea Pines Forest Preserve

This maritime forest and marshland preserve was founded by Charles Fraser, and you’ll find plenty of track for riding – in fact, 15 miles of paths. However, note that bicycles are not allowed on nature trails.

Pinckney Island

Take it up a notch when you head to Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge. With its miles of gravel and grass trails, this retreat from the street gives riders the true off-road sensation. Even e-bikes are permitted for riding groups with mixed levels and interests.

Crossings Park

Just at the end of Arrow Road where Hilton Head Bicycle Company is located, you’ll find the 74-acre Crossings Park. A wooded area with numerous trails, you can hit the dirt here and stop to read the educational signage anytime you need a water break.

Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop

Best of all some of these trails are connected, like Bristol Park and Crossings Park, so if you are looking for a longer ride, you can just keep pedaling. Need more direction? Check out our maps + resources and get to know the whole island.
