As summertime rolls in and brings with it hotter temperatures and more sunshine, heading out on two wheels requires special precautions. Jim Hall is a pro at riding in all types of weather, and he’s sharing his tips for how to keep rolling safely along throughout the sunny season.
Choose your hours carefully. Just like recommendations for visiting the beach, earlier or much later in the day can be the best times for riding when the sun is lower and hopefully the temperature is too.
Consider a shady route like Sea Pines Forest Reserve, which features canopied paths, or Shelter Cove with its park and boardwalk.
Be aware that Hilton Head Island gets busier during summer, with good reason, of course. But that can mean more traffic, so take extra care when riding along streets.
Practice good bike maintenance, especially when it comes to tire pressure. It can help to ride on slightly softer tires when the pavement is hot. Stop in to have your bike checked any time the weather shifts.
Your wardrobe is a key to comfort. When temps are high, choose light-colored clothing and go for fabrics that are breathable like cotton or linen. Even better, special sweat-wicking materials speed up evaporation to keep you drier and cooler. And contrary to what you might think, long sleeves in the right fabric can be cooler than short sleeves or a tank top.
Not only can long sleeves keep you cooler, but they also protect from the sun. And speaking of that, be sure to apply plenty of sunscreen. Choose an SPF of at least 30 and consider a mineral sunblock with an ingredient that physically stops the UV rays, such as zinc oxide for broad spectrum protection. And don’t worry about a chalky, white look. Zinc products are much improved these days and can go on clear and smooth.
A lot of biking on Hilton Head is more for leisure than sport, which is a good fit for hot weather. This is not the time to push yourself – just take it easy. An e-bike can be particularly helpful in this case because the motor can take over or assist whenever you feel like you are doing too much.
Drink up, before, during, and after you ride! We’re talking about water and other hydrating beverages like those with electrolytes. Bring a lot of water on your ride too, so you can pour it over your head – or over your friend’s head – if you start to overheat.
Get some cool sunglasses. Show off your style while protecting your eyes from the sun. They’ll also help you see better when there is too much glare.
Nothing compares to a summer bike ride, whether along the beach, on a trail, or through town. Just take Jim’s advice and keep your journeys safe during the season of sun.

The best vacations strike a balance: a place that feels like a true getaway but still gives you all the comforts of home. That’s exactly the appeal of Host & Home vacation rentals on Hilton Head Island. Think spacious homes, private pools, ocean views, and thoughtful extras that make settling in effortless.
But there’s one addition that turns a great stay into a seamless island experience: having bikes ready and waiting when you arrive.
A simple way to ride more, stress less
We’ve partnered with Host & Home as a preferred bike provider, making it easy to include cycling in your trip without adding anything to your to-do list, especially putting your bikes on a trailer or needing to maintain them after a beach vacation.
You simply reserve your stay at a Host & Home property and let the guest experience team know what bikes you’d like to rent. Then show up and find everything delivered directly to your rental. No pickups. No logistics. Just step outside and start riding. Host & Home will simply add all the charges to your final bill.
Options for every rider
Whether you’re planning a relaxed cruise or covering more ground, there’s something for everyone — classic cruisers for laid-back rides; electric bikes for longer, easier exploring; kids’ bikes for younger riders; and even options for bringing your dog along.
Each rental includes complimentary baskets and locks, so you’re ready to go the moment you arrive.
More than a place to stay
Part of what sets Host & Home apart is their attention to detail across the entire guest experience. Their properties span top Hilton Head areas — from Sea Pines and Palmetto Dunes to Coligny and Forest Beach — and reflect a background rooted in luxury hospitality and real estate.
That shows up in the extras, like branded beach towels, laundry essentials, golf access, and beach setups with chairs and umbrellas. Add bike delivery to that list, and your stay becomes less about planning and all about enjoying.
Because when everything is handled ahead of time, you’re free to do what you came for: relax, explore, and make the most of every mile.

We enjoy biking throughout the year, but this leisure activity-sport-transportation method claims May as its special month. Not only is May the official National Bike Month, but it’s also filled with several days highlighting specific aspects of biking.
But before we get into the details, let’s look at how the whole celebration got started.
National Bike Month was launched in 1956 by the League of American Bicyclists to highlight the numerous benefits of biking. Those benefits include fitness, the environment, mental well-being, a chance to get close to nature and much more.
This year, there are several ways you can recognize National Bike Month. First, there is National Ride a Bike Day coming up on May 3. This tradition only started in 2021 and is held on the first Sunday of the month. It’s the perfect option for kicking off the month and encourages everyone to get on a bike to do something they might usually drive to — think run an errand or meet a friend. You could also choose something sportier like an energetic several-mile ride.
Next up — Bike to Work Week takes place May 11-17. This call to commute on two wheels includes Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 15.
Younger riders can get into the action too with National Bike & Roll to School Day on May 6, which is led by the National Center for Safe Routes to School.
We’re proud to be recognized as an official Bicycle Friendly Business by the League of American Bicyclists, and we’re looking forward to celebrating bike riding all month. Pedal on!

We love summer for its long days, warm weather, and relaxing beach excursions. For us, summer is also the busiest season, as Hilton Head Island attracts visitors from near and far to enjoy our Lowcountry splendor. That means we’re renting a lot of bikes and bike accessories, while maintaining our customers’ personal bikes, guiding bike tours, and just being an overall resource for local and visiting riders.
We increase our staff during these busy months through our internship program, and we’re already excited to welcome this year’s nine recruits.
Launched more than seven years ago, the program has seen more than 70 young people take part, and a third of them have earned college credit for their work with us. The internship benefits include housing, a full-time job, and entrepreneurship coaching.
This program gives us the ability to keep things rolling for everyone who needs us during summer. For the interns, the program offers the chance to learn about running a business in an industry they are passionate about – cycling.
This year’s interns will be heading our way in mid-May. Look out for more information about who is joining us and what they love about Hilton Head. Be sure to say hello to them when you stop by the shop!

As Hilton Head eases into its sunniest stretch of the year, the island shifts into full swing. Warmer days, longer evenings, and a steady lineup of events make this the moment to get out and make the most of it.
Spring’s soundtrack is already lined up, starting with a run of live shows featuring our own Jim Hall. The Chilly Willy crew will be making the rounds with their signature mix of jazz, blues, and classic rock—catch them at the Black Marlin on May 2 and June 5, or head to HHP Community Park on May 3 for an outdoor set. They’ll also bring the energy to Local Legend on May 8 and June 12.
If you’re looking to switch things up, make plans for April 29 at Kind of Blue, where WGB takes the stage with a lively set of crowd-favorite covers.
If you’re in the mood for a night indoors (with air conditioning and a standing ovation), the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina delivers. “Hairspray: The Broadway Musical” takes the stage in late April and runs into May, followed by special appearances like mentalist Matt Cooper and a summer production of “Mean Girls: The Musical.”
Looking to slow things down a bit? Step into the island’s deeper history with a Gullah Heritage Trail Tour. These guided experiences offer a meaningful look at the culture, language, and traditions of the Gullah people—an essential part of the Lowcountry story. Tours run most days and provide a perspective you won’t find just strolling the beach.
You can continue that thread at the Coastal Discovery Museum, where hands-on programs, from Lowcountry reptiles to kids story time, bring the island’s ecology and heritage into focus. It’s the kind of place where you might plan a quick visit and end up staying for hours.
By Memorial Day weekend, evenings belong to the Liberty Oak in Harbour Town. The Gregg Russell Summer Concerts return, drawing families and longtime visitors alike for singalongs that have become a Hilton Head tradition.
For something a little more creative, the Sea Pines Beach Club hosts tie-dye sessions throughout the summer. Whether it’s a T-shirt or a bandana for your four-legged companion, it’s an easygoing way to make a colorful souvenir.
And for the adults, there’s always the option to raise a glass. A tour and tasting at the Hilton Head Distillery offers a behind-the-scenes look at rum production, with the bonus of sampling the finished product. If you’re feeling ambitious, the mixology classes take things a step further.
Of course, no matter what’s on your schedule, one activity never goes out of season here. With miles of scenic paths and ocean breezes built in, biking remains the easiest and arguably best way to take it all in. Whether you’re renting a cruiser or setting off on an e-bike tour, it’s the kind of experience that turns a good day into a great one.
