Summer has a way of keeping Hilton Head Island buzzing from morning to night. One minute you’re pedaling beneath moss-draped oaks on a shaded bike path, the next you’re watching fireworks over the marina, browsing a local market, or catching live music by the water. Between the beaches, outdoor events, family activities, and warm Lowcountry evenings, there’s always something happening once the season gets underway.

And since Hilton Head is recognized as a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists, getting from one summer adventure to the next is easy — and a lot more fun — on two wheels.

If you’re planning a June, July, or August escape, here are a few favorite ways to make the most of summer on the island.

Events, Music & Local Favorites

Every summer, Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina becomes one of the island’s busiest gathering spots. The Hilton Head Island Art Festival returns Memorial Day Weekend with dozens of artists showcasing everything from paintings and pottery to photography, jewelry, and handmade goods. The festival is free to attend and combines art, entertainment, shopping, and waterfront dining all in one place.

The celebration continues all season long with HarbourFest, the marina’s signature summer tradition. Beginning Memorial Day Weekend and running through Labor Day, HarbourFest features weekly live music, family entertainment, arts and crafts, and fireworks displays. Kids especially love favorites like Shannon Tanner, Cappy the Clown, and Parrot Palooza.

Another island tradition takes place beneath the famous Liberty Oak in Harbour Town, where Gregg Russell performs evening concerts throughout the summer. Generations of families have gathered there for singalongs, storytelling, and plenty of laughter.

Looking for a slower-paced morning? Cruise over to the Hilton Head Community Market on Saturdays. This family- and pet-friendly market includes local produce, baked goods, artisan items, crafts, and rotating vendors, so every visit offers something a little different.

Shelter Cove Towne Center also keeps the summer calendar packed with entertainment. Tuesday night Summer Jams feature bounce houses, family activities, fireworks, and plenty of energy, while Friday evening Sunset Celebrations pair live music with relaxed summer vibes.

Lowcountry Celebration Park joins the fun too with Party in the Park events on select Thursday evenings throughout June and July. Expect live music, food trucks, beverages, bounce houses, and even car shows for a laid-back community gathering that feels very Hilton Head.

Time to Get Moving

Summer on Hilton Head isn’t only about relaxing. There are plenty of opportunities to stay active while still soaking up the scenery.

At Palmetto Dunes, weekly Turtle Trots invite runners and walkers of all ages to take part in a casual 5K benefiting Palmetto Dunes Cares. Held throughout the summer, these events are more about fun and family participation than competition.

Prefer a slower pace? Start your morning oceanside with Hilton Head Beach Yoga, where participants practice on the sand while the waves roll in nearby. Beach Pilates sessions offer another way to mix fitness with fresh coastal air.

Of course, it wouldn’t be summer on Hilton Head without time on the water. Charter a fishing excursion from Harbour Town Yacht Basin and spend the day casting lines, spotting wildlife, and enjoying the beauty of the Lowcountry from a completely different perspective.

And then there’s golf. Hilton Head’s courses are famous for a reason, but you don’t have to be an expert to join in. First Tee offers approachable options including a six-hole par 3 course, driving range, and disc golf course. Families can also opt for a more playful round at local mini golf favorites like Legendary Golf or Pirate’s Island Adventure Golf.

No matter how you spend your days, summer on Hilton Head tends to fill up quickly with sunshine, music, bike rides, and plenty of memory-making moments. The hardest part is deciding what to do first.
